Is there any good technique to not mess up the highlights? Or is it all just in taking the coloring slow, and being careful with what to leave white?

Welk some important things to keep in mind is to use it minimally and only for surfaces that are shiny that reflect the most light like hair steel etc. But if my advice is still to vague and you dont know where to put your highlights i can always recommend to put them in the eyes of a character. It really makes the eyes pop out!
